The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team posted its fourth shutout in the last five matches Wednesday night, topping Carthage 4-0 in a non-conference affair at Fiskum Field.
The Warhawks (10-4 overall) scored twice in the first six minutes of the second half to break open a close contest.
Lily Horne and
Emma Hager (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) combined for eight saves in the shutout.
UW-Whitewater recorded three shots and one corner kick in the first 10-plus minutes of action. The Firebirds (3-9) put a shot on goal in the 10th minute, but Horne made the save to preserve the 0-0 tie.
After back-to-back saves by Horne on the other end,
Nina Malak (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) tallied what held as the game-winning goal on the counter attack in the 33rd minute.
Maya Rebic (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) was credited with the assist on the play.
After a Carthage shot was saved by Horne in the 34th minute, the two teams had limited opportunities over the rest of the period, and UW-W's lead stayed at 1-0.
The Warhawks came out aggressively in the second half as
Olivia May (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) found the back of the net in the 47th minute on an assist from
Elizabeth Klein (Burlington, Wis./Catholic Central). Four minutes later, after two more saves by Horne, Klein put UW-W ahead 3-0 on an assist from
Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere).
May added another goal in the 64th minute to account for the final margin after
Anna Brodjian (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) hit the post on a shot attempt.
Hager made one more save to preserve the shutout in the 75th minute. UW-Whitewater held the Firebirds without a shot the rest of the way.
The Warhawks resume Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this Saturday as they visit UW-Eau Claire. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
