The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team overcame late deficits in the first and fourth sets Wednesday night to earn its 11th straight win, a 26-24, 25-16, 25-27, 25-22 victory against Dubuque (Iowa) at Russell Arena.
The Warhawks (19-1 overall) trailed 23-22 in the opening set before rallying to take four of the last five points. In the fourth set, UW-W faced a 22-21 deficit, but finished the match on a 4-0 run.
Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) posted 14 kills on a .357 hitting percentage and added a team-high four blocks.
Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) collected 11 kills,
Morgan Wardall (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) registered 10 kills, five digs and three blocks, and
Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) finished with nine kills on a .400 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks.
KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) totaled 28 assists and nine digs, while
Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) turned in a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs.
Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) led the defense with 23 digs and a pair of service aces.
Hailey Mackenthun (Webster, Minn./Northfield) totaled 16 digs and two aces, and
Emma Aske (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) added 11 digs to go with her five kills and two aces.
The first set featured 12 ties and five lead changes. The Spartans (8-14) controlled the first part of the set, jumping out to a 12-7 advantage. UW-Whitewater rallied back behind the serving of Sotiros and Jensen, but Dubuque continued to match points. With the set tied at 24-24, Wardall and Weinfurt came up with back-to-back kills to give UW-W a 1-0 match lead.
The second set was tied at 7-7 before Anderson served the Warhawks to a 13-7 lead. Dubuque got as close as two points the rest of the way, but Aske and Jensen helped UW-W pull away with serving runs.
UW-Whitewater led in the third set by a 16-13 score, but the Spartans rallied for a 22-19 advantage. UW-W fought off three set points and had a match point at 25-24, but Dubuque scored the final three points of the set to force a fourth.
UW-W led 18-12 in the fourth set before Dubuque chipped away and eventually tied it at 19-19. The two teams traded points to get to 22-22, but Aske served the rest of the way to give the Warhawks their 13th home win of the year.
UW-Whitewater resumes Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday at No. 21 UW-Stevens Point. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
