The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team picked up a key road win Saturday night, defeating No. 21 UW-Stevens Point 25-20, 25-15, 25-21 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
The Warhawks (20-1 overall, 4-1 WIAC), who are now alone in second place in the conference standings, hit .260 for the match and held the Pointers to a .109 in the match.
Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) posted 10 kills on a .571 hitting percentage and added four digs and two blocks.
Morgan Wardall (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) collected 10 kills on a .400 hitting percentage with one block, while
Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) tallied eight kills and two blocks.
Emma Aske (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) finished with five kills on a .455 hitting percentage and added 10 digs and one block, and
Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) registered five kills.
KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) totaled 18 assists and seven digs, while
Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) recorded 15 assists and seven digs.
Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) paced the defense with 11 digs to go along with three assists.
Neither team led by more than three points over the first two-thirds of the opening set before
Hailey Mackenthun (Webster, Minn./Northfield) served UW-Whitewater to a 20-16 advantage. The two teams traded points from there, and UW-W took a 1-0 match lead.
The Warhawks jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the second set and didn't look back. The Pointers (20-5, 3-2) drew to within 11-8, but UW-Whitewater scored six of the next seven points for a 17-9 advantage and never led by fewer than six points the rest of the way.
UW-Stevens Point held a 4-1 advantage in the third set, but Jensen served the team to an 8-4 advantage as the Warhawks rallied with seven straight points. The Pointers tied the set at 18-18, but UW-W scored five of the next six points for a 23-19 advantage. Kills by
Baylie Hansen (Bonduel, Wis./Shawano) at 23-20 and Anderson at 24-21 ended the match.
UW-Whitewater visits UW-Platteville for another WIAC match this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
