Men’s Soccer Earns Double-OT Win on the Road

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team earned its sixth true road win of the year Friday night with a thrilling 2-1 triumph in double overtime at Wisconsin Lutheran.

With the match tied at 1-1 in the 103rd minute, Andres Villarreal (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) found the game-winning goal on a service from Matthew Waters (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) into the box, heading the ball inside the far post to give the Warhawks (8-1-1 overall) their third straight victory.

UW-Whitewater finished with a 32-8 advantage in shots and a 15-1 margin in corner kicks, and didn't allow the Warriors (5-6) to get off a shot in either overtime period.

Matthew Vollmer (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) earned the win in goal, posting two saves in his 57-plus minutes of action. Duncan Morgan (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) started the match at goalkeeper and didn't face a shot in 45 minutes.

The Warhawks wasted no time putting pressure on the Wisconsin Lutheran defense, earning a corner kick in the first minute and putting their first shot on goal in the 17th.

UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute on a goal from Evan Donini (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West), his second of the year. He was assisted by Jacob Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) and Zack Kristy (Burr Ridge, Ill./Lyons Township) on the play.

The Warhawks posted four more shots, including one on net, over the final portion of the period and carried its 1-0 lead into halftime.

UW-W earned four corner kicks in the first two minutes of the second half and continued to be aggressive offensively. The Warriors leveled the match at 1-1 with a goal in the 66th minute.

The two teams traded shots over the next 10 minutes before the Warhawks held the pressure in the Wisconsin Lutheran third of the field. UW-Whitewater earned a penalty kick in the 86th minute, but was unable to take the lead.

The Warriors' final shot attempt in regulation sailed left, and the match entered overtime.

UW-W tried three shots in the first extra period, but were unable to put one on frame. The team took one shot and one corner kick in the second overtime before Villarreal ended the contest.

The Warhawks visit Luther Monday for a match starting at 6 p.m. in Decorah, Iowa. The UW-Whitewater/Luther match was originally scheduled for Sept. 15.
