As part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the opening of Perkins Stadium, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Department of Intercollegiate Athletics presents the "Perkins Stadium at 50" series Presented by UW Credit Union, a look at some of the most memorable moments and games in the history of the stadium.
Since the start of the 2005 season, the UW-Whitewater football team has won 12 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships and reached the national quarterfinals or further 13 times.
A big reason for the Warhawks' success has been the team's ability to win games in the month of November.
Following a 35-10 loss against UW-La Crosse to close the season on Nov. 13, 2004, at Perkins Stadium, UW-Whitewater has won 44 consecutive home games in November, including 20 during the regular season and 24 in the postseason.
Including road games, the Warhawks are 59-1 in November over the last 15 years.
UW-W's November home winning streak has been put in jeopardy several times in recent years.
One close call came in 2019, when UW-Whitewater trailed UW-La Crosse 10-7 entering the fourth quarter. A 10-yard touchdown run by
Jarrod Ware (Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) with 8:36 remaining, coupled with an interception by
Mark McGrath (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) inside the UW-W 10-yard line with 4:41 on the clock, helped the Warhawks
complete a 21-17 victory.
In 2017,
UW-Whitewater hung on for a 17-16 victory over UW-Platteville to retain the Miner's Axe, turning the Pioneers over on downs with 1:14 to play.
The
Warhawks needed overtime in 2016 to outlast UW-River Falls 27-20, taking the lead for good on a 6-yard touchdown run by Chris Nelson and ending the contest on a fumble recovery by Matt Seitz on the ensuing drive.
Other one-possession November home games during the 15-year run include a
17-10 win over UW-Stout in 2008 and a
24-21 triumph over UW-La Crosse in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs in 2006.
