The No. 19 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team tallied a 3-1 record and remains alive in the consolation bracket following competition Friday at the first day of the National Wrestling Coaches Association Multi-Divisional National Duals at Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville.
The Warhawks (8-4) topped Heidelberg (Ohio) 37-11 to start the day before falling 31-16 against third-ranked Wabash (Ind.) in the second match of the day.
UW-Whitewater advanced two rounds in the consolation bracket with wins over Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) by a 39-7 score and No. 13 Ithaca (N.Y.) by a 24-12 count.
Senior
Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg), senior
Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), sophomore
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) and senior
Nick Sundberg (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) led the Warhawks at 141, 149, 174 and 197 pounds, respectively. Rice, ranked third by D3wrestle.com, collected two pins, one technical fall and one major decision to finish 4-0 for the day.
Tortorice recorded a 4-0 mark with one technical fall. Shinhoster, ranked fifth by D3wrestle.com, finished 3-0, including a 10-2 major decision over top-ranked defending national champion Darden Schurg of Wabash. Sundberg claimed four wins – all by decision.
Senior
Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), ranked No. 1 in the nation at 125 pounds by D3wrestle.com, posted two pins and one major decision on his way to a 3-1 record. His lone loss came against third-ranked Carlos Champagne of Wabash.
Freshman
Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was perfect in his two matches at 157 pounds. Senior
John Broughton (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) earned a 9-7 decision over 10th-ranked Sam Schneider of Ithaca at the same weight class.
Sophomore
Cadin Koeppel (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) tallied two victories in his two matches at 285 pounds.
The Warhawks face No. 8 Johnson & Wales (R.I.) Saturday at 8 a.m. Central Time.
