The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team opened the non-traditional portion of its 2019-20 season Friday by reaching the finals in two of the three doubles flights at the Warhawk Fall Invitational at Wangerin Courts.
The six-team tournament features five scholarship programs, including Cardinal Stritch, Ferris State (Mich.), Grand Valley State (Mich.), Roosevelt (Ill.) and St. Francis (Ill.).
Junior
Robert Rider (Annapolis, Md./South River) and freshman
Cole Lindwall (Monona, Wis./Monona Grove) highlighted the day for the Warhawks, winning the No. 3 doubles draw with a perfect 3-0 mark. The duo knocked off Grand Valley State, Roosevelt and Cardinal Stritch in tightly-contested pro-set matches on its way to the title.
Sophomores
Parker Hearne (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) and
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) finished seventh in the same draw.
Sophomores
Noah Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) and
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) placed second in the No. 2 flight, topping Grand Valley State and Roosevelt for their trip to the championship match.
Senior
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./South) and sophomore
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) posted a 2-1 record at the No. 1 draw to place fifth, winning the consolation final by an 8-3 score over Ferris State.
One round of singles was also played in each of the six flights. Freshman
Danila Borovykh (Ryazan, Russia/Boca Prep International School (Fla.)) and Pietila (No. 4), and Guillermo (No. 5) are each onto the semifinals in their respective draws.
Play continues at Wangerin Courts Saturday at 9 a.m.
