The No. 12 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team extended its win streak to five before dropping its first match of the season Friday on its way to a 1-1 record on the first day of the Augsburg Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Warhawks (5-1 overall) downed George Fox (Ore.) 25-22, 25-17, 25-21 before falling against Augsburg by a score of 25-22, 23-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-8.
Against George Fox (2-3), UW-Whitewater overcame a slow offensive start and emerged with a tournament-opening win.
Senior outside hitter
Rachel Butterfield (Milton, Wis./Milton) and freshman outside hitter
Chloe Buescher (Janesville, Wis./Milton) tallied eight kills apiece to lead the offense. Sophomore outside hitter
Emma Aske (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) recorded six kills and added nine digs.
Sophomore setter
KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) finished with 19 assists, two service aces and two digs, and sophomore setter
Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) posted nine assists, eight digs and three service aces.
Freshman libero
Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) led the back row with 13 digs to go along with four assists and two aces.
Against Augsburg (4-1), the Warhawks took two of the first three sets but was unable to close out the tightly-contested match.
Butterfield and Buescher paced the offense again with 13 kills apiece, and Buescher rounded out her match with a double-double, adding 10 digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Emily Gillen (Richfield, Wis./Slinger) collected nine kills and four digs, and senior middle hitter
Ashton Doll (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) tallied nine kills and three blocks.
Sotiros contributed a double-double with 21 assists and 13 digs, and Manssen nearly had one of her own with an 18-assist, nine-dig performance.
Jensen totaled 20 digs and six assists, and sophomore defensive specialist
Hailey Mackenthun (Webster, Minn./Northfield) registered 11 digs.
UW-Whitewater closes out the tournament with two matches Saturday, facing UMass Boston at 10 a.m. and St. Thomas (Minn.) at 3 p.m.
