Men's Soccer Retains Shaymus Guinn Cup in Double Overtime

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team earned a crucial win at fellow independent UW-Platteville by a score of 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday night to retain the Shaymus Guinn Cup.

The win also meant the Warhawks retain possession of the Shaymus Guinn Cup. The cup was created to honor UW-Whitewater head coach Tony Guinn's son, Shaymus, who passed away in December 2012 at the age of 11 after a five-year battle against E-Wing Sarcoma and chemo-induced acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

The Warhawks improve their season record to 11-1-1, while the Pioneers drop to 3-5-2.

UW-Whitewater came out attacking right away, recording six shots, including two on goal from Trevor Johnson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) and Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East), in the first 22 minutes of the game.

UW-Platteville was unable to counter in the first half, as they tallied three shots, but goalkeeper Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) was able to record two saves.

The next half was slower for the Warhawks, as they relied on their defenders to keep the Pioneers scoreless. The team took three shots in the final 20 minutes of the half. Raymonds recorded a shot on goal in the 80th minute, but was unable to get it past the goalkeeper.

The Pioneers had a stronger second half, recording six shots, half of which were made on goal. UW-Platteville was awarded four corner kicks, but could not get the ball to the box.

With the game continuing to be back and forth between the two teams, regular time came to an end with a 0-0 score, pushing the match into extra minutes.

In the first overtime, Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale) recorded a shot in the 95th minute, but the ball was blocked by the Pioneer defenders.

Johnson recorded a header shot in the 101st minute of the second overtime. After a corner kick from Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) in the 102nd minute, Raymonds recorded his third shot on goal, but was unable to get it to the back of the net.

After a foul on UW-Platteville, the Warhawks were able to capitalize on their free kick opportunity when Garrett Morgando (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) scored the game winning goal in the 108th minute.

King tied his career best of six saves in tonight's contest.

UW-Whitewater will be back in action to host Augustana (Ill.) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
