Men's Soccer Wins First Game of the Season

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team had its season debut today, defeating Westminster (Mo.) by a score of 4-0 at Badger High School in Lake Geneva.

The Warhawks move to 1-0 in the season, while Westminster moves to 0-2.

Junior forward Joey Pumo (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) scored the Warhawks' first two goals in the first half. His first goal came in the 15th minute with an assist from Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale). Pumo's second goal came just minutes later in the 17th minute.

Westminster fought back, recording five shots on goal from the 23rd until the 38th minute. But they could not find a hole, as sophomore goalkeeper Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) accounted for three saves during those 15 minutes.

UW-W continued to control the second half of the game, as they had six shots on goal in the first 12 minutes.

Junior midfielder Brad Ludwig (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) scored a pair in the 72nd and 73rd minutes of the game. Freshman Carlos Mondejar (Madrid, Spain/Logos International School) provided an assist; the first of his college career. Ludwig's second goal was unassisted.

Despite Westminster's five more shots on goal, the shutout remained intact.

UW-Whitewater is back in action on Monday versus Alma (Mich.) at 1 p.m.
