Savannah Curtis (Lodi, Wis./Lodi) scored two goals as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team defeated St. Scholastica 4-1 in Saturday's non-conference matchup on the final day of the Labor Day Challenge Presented by BSN SPORTS in Duluth, Minn.
The Warhawks move to 1-1 for the season after outshooting their opponent, 15-4.
Following the conclusion of play, senior
Elli Wahlberg (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) and junior
Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
UWW came out with a bang after Curtis scored her first goal in the sixth minute. She was assisted by Boyd.
The Warhawks' corner kick in the 11th minute led to freshman
Elizabeth Klein's (Burlington, Wis./Catholic Central) first goal of her college career. Boyd helped out with her second assist of the game, increasing the lead to 2-0.
UW-Whitewater continued to control the game with shots on goal in the 11th, 25th and 28th minutes of the game.
St. Scholastica came back fighting at the start of the second half. Emily Olsen scored a goal in the 47th minute after senior goalkeeper
Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) saved the first shot attempt from going into the net.
UW-W answered back in the 52nd minute with a goal from Boyd with an assist from Curtis to make the game 3-1.
Similar to the first half's tempo, the next goal was made just seven minutes later with a shot made by Curtis. She was assisted by sophomore
Carli Nehls (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North).
The score would remain at 4-1 despite the Warhawks taking another five shots on goal before the game clock ran out.
UW-Whitewater will host their season home opener against MSOE on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
