Women's Soccer Defeated in Season Opener

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team opened up their season against the College of Saint Benedict. The Warhawks faced a one-goal deficit in the first half, but managed a comeback to tie the game at 2-2 and force the game into overtime. The match ended with a Saint Benedict goal, resulting in a 3-2 loss.

The Warhawks start out their season with a 0-1 record, while Saint Benedict improves to 1-0.

Saint Benedict came out strong with a goal by junior Megan Thompson in the 13th minute. Senior Elli Wahlberg (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) returned with a shot on goal three minutes later, but it was saved by the goalkeeper.

Saint Benedict had possession of the ball for most of the first half. Senior Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) protected the Warhawks from five shots on goal in the first 22 minutes of play. The first half ended with CSB at a 1-0 advantage.

A goal by junior Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) in the 56th minute tied the game at 1-1. After a corner kick in the 69th minute, Thompson scored again to give Saint Benedict a lead of 2-1 after 71 minutes.

UW-Whitewater fired right back with a goal from Wahlberg just 20 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2. She was assisted by Boyd on her shot.

With the regulation time that remained, possession was back and forth between the two teams, with multiple shots on goal and saves by both goalkeepers to push the game into overtime.

Unfortunately for UW-Whitewater, the game ended one minute into overtime with a third goal from Thompson to win the game.

The Warhawks are back in action on Saturday at St. Scholastica (Minn.). Kick-off time is slated for 2 p.m.
