The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team was defeated 5-1 against 27th-ranked Kalamazoo (Mich.) on Friday in a second-round match of the NCAA Division III Championship at Washington University in St. Louis.
The Warhawks finish the 2018-19 season with a 16-8 record, closing out their 12th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 13 years with their second loss of the season against Kalamazoo (14-6), which advances to face Washington-St. Louis in the third round Saturday.
Senior
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) and
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) recorded an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles to account for UW-Whitewater's lone point. The duo finishes the season with a 17-12 record playing together.
Freshman
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) led his contest 6-4, 4-1 at No. 4 singles before the match was called after a team decision was reached.
Gray split his first two sets at No. 2 singles, and freshman
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) also split his first two sets at No. 5 before his match was called.
UW-Whitewater is set to join the New Jersey Athletic Conference next season as an affiliate member.
