The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis squad hosted UW-Green Bay and Edgewood College Monday at Wangerin Courts. The matches were moved up due to the potential of inclement weather later in the day, and the men's matches against Carthage College and Edgewood College were moved to Thursday night.
The No. 36 Warhawks (10-11) struggled to find their footing against Division I UW-Green Bay (4-17) in a 6-1 loss in the early afternoon, before bouncing back to down Edgewood (19-7) by a 9-0 score in the late afternoon match to snap a five-match losing streak.
The match against UW-Green Bay was played under Division I rules, where winning the majority of doubles matches counts for one single point. The Warhawks dropped the first and second doubles matches to drop the doubles point. Sophomore
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) and freshman
Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) emerged with the lone doubles victory 7-6 (3). In singles, Nierman averted the complete sweep with a 7-6, 6-3 victory in the third slot.
In the afternoon match against Edgewood, the women started out in singles. They took off running, taking all six slots in straight sets. Senior
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) led the charge 6-2, 6-1 in the first slot.
Doubles went as well as singles, with the Warhawks claiming all three doubles points on route to an impressive sweep of their second match on the day. Martin paired up with fellow senior
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) to set the tone again with an 8-1 victory in the first position.
Nierman earned a victory in all four matches she played in on the day, two in singles and two in doubles with Rueth.
The Warhawks will return to the courts Saturday afternoon to host the WIAC Final Four AQ Tournament starting at noon. The Warhawks will also host Senior Day that day as well at Wangerin Courts.
