The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater tennis squads traveled to St. Louis Friday afternoon for showdowns with nationally ranked Washington-St. Louis teams.

The men (13-6) were defeated by the No. 6 Washington-St. Louis men (15-5) in an 8-1 loss. The 36th-ranked women (9-9) battled hard against the No. 15 Wash U. women (10-10), but fell by a slim 5-4 margin.

The men lost all three doubles matches before picking up a team point in singles. Freshman
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) earned a victory in the fourth slot by a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) score.

The women claimed one match in doubles thanks to seniors
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) and
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton), who put together an 8-6 performance in the first slot

UW-Whitewater managed to take half of the singles matches in a losing effort against the Bears. Kitchell took a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) victory in the first slot, sophomore
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) claimed a 7-6 (2), 6-2 point in the fourth, and freshman
Elsie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd)Â earned a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win in the fifth slot.

The women and men will both return to Wangerin Courts on Monday.  The women start play against UW-Green Bay at 3:30 p.m. while the men start with Carthage at the same time. Both play Edgewood at 7 p.m. to finish the day. Â
