National Runner-Up Jasinski Highlights Day 1 at NCAA Championships

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up their first day of competition Friday at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass.
 
The Warhawk men finished with eight points for the day, good for a tie for ninth place in the overall standings. The women will not record a team score and have completed competition for the indoor season.
 
On the men's side, junior Zach Jasinski (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) finished as national-runner up to four-time champion Luke Winder of North Central (Ill.). Jasinski posted a 16-06.75 (5.05 meters) to earn his first career All-America honor. He is the program's first All-American in the men's pole vault since 1992 and first indoor top-eight finisher since 1988.
 
Competing in his first national meet, junior Adam Schommer (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) tied for 16th in the pole vault with a height of 14-07.25 (4.45 meters).
 
Junior Alex Duff (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) punched his ticket to Saturday's 60-meter hurdles final with a personal record time of 8.07 seconds. He seeks his second straight All-America medal in the race, which is set for 12:55 p.m. Central Time Saturday.
 
Sophomore David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) made his national debut with a 17th-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, recording a time of 15:04.67.
 
For the women, sophomore Shelby Nickels (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) completed her first appearance at the NCAA Championships with a 12th-place showing in the long jump. She collected a mark of 17-05.50 (5.32 meters) on her first jump of the meet.
 
Junior Abbie Felton (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) tallied a 57.71 in the 400-meter dash, good for 11th place in the preliminary. She finished 10th in the same race last indoor season.
 
Duff will complete the Warhawks' trip Saturday. He is scheduled to race at 12:55 p.m. Central Time in the men's 60 hurdles final.
