The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater tennis squads continued play in Hilton Head Island, S.C., as part of their spring trip Wednesday morning. Both squads played against DePauw (Ind.).
The No. 36 women (9-6) ended their spring trip with a 7-2 victory over the DePauw women (5-7), while the men (9-4) finished the day with a dominant victory over the DePauw men (6-7) by an 8-1 score.
The women easily took the first match in doubles thanks to seniors
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) and
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton), and just barely lost the second slot via tiebreaker.
Heading into singles, the Warhawk women took the first four slots to clinch the match. Kitchell continued her winning ways with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the first slot, while sophomores
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) and
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill/Niles North) claimed tight victories in the third and fourth slots, respectively. Nierman won 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6), while Palavra emerged with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-2) victory.
Martin clinched the match for the Warhawks with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory in the second slot. The Warhawk women would go on to win all six singles matches on the day.
The Warhawk men started out firing on all cylinders against DePauw (Ind.), taking all three points in the doubles matches. The Warhawks quickly clinched the match with freshman
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) taking a point in the fourth slot and freshman
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) claiming the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
Seniors
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) and
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) closed out the day with close come-from-behind victories in the first two slots, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9), and 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8), respectively.
The women concluded their spring trip today and will return to Wisconsin next Friday and Saturday, April 5-6, to participate in the Midwest Invitational in Madison, Wis. at Nielson Tennis Stadium. The men will return to the courts Thursday at 10 a.m. Central Time to conclude their spring trip with a match against Oberlin (Ohio).
