The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team continued its spring trip Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va., against Bates (Maine).

The Warhawk men (8-3) toppled No. 23 Bates (Maine) (3-4) by a 5-4 margin in the third and deciding set during the final match of the evening.

The Warhawks started out strong in doubles, claiming the second and third doubles matches to head into singles up 2-1. Senior
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) and freshman
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) claimed the second slot in an 8-6 affair, while junior
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./South) and freshman
Noah Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) emerged with an 8-5 win in the third match.

In singles, Mitchell and freshman
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) gave the Warhawks a quick two points in the third and fourth slots, respectively, with a 6-2, 6-2 match and a 6-3, 6-0 match, respectively.Â

Bates claimed the other three singles matches, leaving it down to freshman
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) in the fifth slot for the Warhawks. After dropping the first set 4-6, Pietila came back strong with 6-1, 6-3 sets to seal the upset victory for the Warhawks.Â

The Warhawk men will return to action alongside the women Sunday at noon Central Time. Both squads will play host Mary Washington to conclude the Fredericksburg, Va., portion of their spring trip.Â
