The No. 35 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team opened its 2019 spring season Saturday by hosting a pair of Division I opponents at Lake Geneva Tennis in Lake Geneva.
The Warhawks (6-3 overall) were defeated 7-0 in matches against Northern Iowa and Milwaukee. Only one point was determined by doubles play under Division I rules in both duals.
Against Northern Iowa (3-3), sophomore
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) and
Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) posted a 6-3 triumph at No. 3 doubles, but the Panthers took the doubles point by winning at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions.
In singles play, freshman
Elsie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) forced a third-set super tiebreaker at the fifth position, but was edged 11-9 in the tiebreak. Northern Iowa took all other matches in straight sets, with senior
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) and Nierman forcing 7-5 sets at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
Against Milwaukee (7-6), UW-Whitewater was swept in doubles play before sophomore
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) put the team on the board with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph at No. 4 singles.
The Panthers emerged victorious in each of the other five singles contests.
The Warhawks return to action next Saturday, March 16, with matches against Augustana (Ill.) at 9:45 a.m. and NAIA foe Cardinal Stritch at 5:30 p.m. Both contests will be played at Lake Geneva Tennis.
