The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team shrugged off a slow start Sunday on its way to a 6-3 victory at Wabash in a dual contest at Collett Tennis Center in Crawfordsville, Ind.

Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Warhawks (6-1 overall) claimed five of six matches in singles play to knock off the Little Giants (7-6), who entered Sunday having won six straight duals.

Sophomore Robert Rider (Annapolis, Md./South River) and freshman Noah Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) provided UW-Whitewater's lone doubles point with an 8-2 triumph at No. 3. Wabash claimed each of the other doubles matches in tiebreakers.

Freshman Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) gave the Warhawks a 3-2 advantage with straight-set wins at the second and third singles positions, respectively. Freshman Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) followed suit with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the fourth slot.

The Little Giants drew to within 4-3 after a three-setter at No. 1, but junior Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./South) provided the dual-clinching point with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 6.

Guillermo accounted for the final margin with a three-set win at the fifth position.

The Warhawks return to Lake Geneva Tennis next Sunday, March 17, to take on Augustana (Ill.) at 10 a.m. and NAIA opponent Cardinal Stritch at 2:30 p.m.
