The No. 2 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team closed out the two-day Moe's BBQ Smokin' Classic Tournament Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 setback against host Huntingdon in Montgomery, Ala.
The Warhawks (1-2 overall) left nine runners on base, including five in the first four innings, and the Hawks (5-0) tallied runs in the first and third frames.
Junior right fielder
Alex Doud (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago) posted two hits and reached base three times to lead the UW-Whitewater offense. Senior catcher
Mike Aiello (Racine, Wis./Horlick) scored one run and registered one hit, and senior third baseman
Connor Schneider (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) drew a pair of walks.
Sophomore pitcher
Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) took the loss, allowing three runs in five innings of work. Sophomore
Connor Spear (Highland, Ind./Mount Carmel (Ill.)) tossed three scoreless frames in relief.
The Warhawks put two runners on with nobody out after back-to-back hits by junior centerfielder
Noah Jensen (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and sophomore shortstop
Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley), but Huntingdon escaped the jam on a double play and a strikeout.
UW-Whitewater put two on with no one out again in the fourth, but the Hawks retired the next three batters in order. The Warhawks put two more on with nobody out in the seventh, but were unable to push a run across the plate.
UW-Whitewater got on the board in the top of the ninth on a pair of Huntingdon errors and brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but was unable to stage a comeback.
