Warhawks Downed by Division II West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 15 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team opened its spring break trip Wednesday night with a 14-0 loss against Division II West Florida at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

The Warhawks (1-3 overall) totaled nine hits, but left 10 runners on base, including multiple runners in three different innings.

The Argonauts (19-8) broke open a close game with eight runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Sophomore Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) surrendered only two runs while striking out five in five innings of work, but dropped to 0-2 on the season with the tough-luck loss. Five other relievers combined to toss the final four frames, including junior Larkin Hanselmann (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove), who pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings.

Senior first baseman Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge), senior catcher Mike Aiello (Racine, Wis./Horlick) and sophomore right fielder Bryan Sturdevant (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) collected two hits apiece to lead the UW-W offense. Senior designated hitter Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson), junior centerfielder Alex Doud (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago) and freshman left fielder Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) each posted one hit.

West Florida tallied one two-out run each in the second and third innings.

The Warhawks loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the fourth, but the Argonauts pitched out of the inning with two strikeouts sandwiched around a fielder's choice.

West Florida took advantage of a pair of UW-Whitewater errors and a three-run triple to the gap in left center in its eight-run sixth.

The Warhawks put two on with no outs in the sixth on hits by Aiello and Sturdevant, but the two were left stranded in scoring position. The Argonauts turned double plays in the seventh and ninth innings to help preserve their shutout.

UW-Whitewater continues play in Pensacola Thursday at 6 p.m. against St. Thomas (Minn.).
