The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team defeated American Collegiate Conference Association opponent Finlandia (Mich.) 7-2 in the ACAA semifinals match on Saturday.
The Warhawks move to 15-4-1 while the Lions drop to 14-12-1.
UW-W's offense had a strong showing from the beginning of the match, recording two shots on within the first six minutes.
A foul was called on Finlandia in the 15th minute, resulting in a Whitewater free kick.
Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) was able to take advantage of the opportunity to score the first goal of the game.
Finlandia was able to put their first point on the board in the 37th minute when the Lions were able to find a gap in the defenders.
After an additional seven shots on goal, the Warhawks found their second goal of the half when
Brian Zimdars (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy) was able to find
Kortu Josiah (Oostburg, Wis./Oostburg) in the 39th minute.
The offense continued to have a strong showing in the second half, keeping possession and recording multiple shots on Finlandia.
After a shot on goal in the 56th minute, the Warhawks received a corner kick which led to three shots on goal within the following two minutes.
Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) took the next corner kick in the 59th minute, recording a perfect pass to
Trevor Johnson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) to head the ball into the back of the net.
After taking the lead, the Warhawks ran away with the game, recording an additional goal just two minutes later. Wright was on the assist again, with the goal from Ludwig after a Finlandia foul.
UW-W recorded 44 shots, including 29 on goal, throughout the match
UW-Whitewater replaced their entire line-up in the 65th minute.
Andres Villarreal (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) hit the crossbar two minutes later, and
Carlos Mondejar (Madrid, Spain/Logos International School) used the rebound to score the fourth Whitewater goal of the game.
In the 68th minute, Josiah hit the post and
Matthew Waters (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) was able to get the ball past the goalkeeper for a 6-1 lead.
The Lions found their second goal late in the 79th minute after working the ball in front of the box.
With :19 seconds left in the game,
Jalen Holley (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) scored the final goal with an assist from Villarreal to end the game with a 7-2 win.
UW-Whitewater will be competing in the ACAA Championship Final at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
