The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team recorded an exciting 4-3 win at No. 24 ranked Loras on Tuesday night to retain the Hawk Cup in the rivalry match.
The Warhawks improve to 14-4-1, while the Duhawks fall to 14-5-1.
In the first half, both teams appeared to have equal possession of the ball and remained scoreless for the first 30 minutes.
Joey Pumo (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) was the first player to put a point on the board, recording a solo goal in the 31st minute. In the 42nd minute, the Duhawks scored a goal to tie up the game leading into halftime.
UW-W controlled the second half early, earning two corner kicks in the first four minutes of the game. In the 52nd minute,
Trevor Johnson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) was able to give the team the lead with an assist from
Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig).
Loras fired right back, recording their second goal of the match just 32 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2.
The Duhawk offense controlled the middle of the half, tallying eight shots, including four on goal. They eventually found a gap in the Warhawk defense, scoring a goal in the 67th minute to take their first lead of the game.
In the final 10 minutes, UW-W took back the game.
Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale) recorded a shot on goal in the 86th minute, but was unable to get it past the goalkeeper.
About one minute later, the Warhawks received a penalty kick after a Loras foul.
Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) was able to capitalize on the opportunity, tying up the game yet again with just three minutes left in regulation time.
The men received a corner kick at the 89:31 mark, and
Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) was able to head the ball to the back of the net with an assist from
Brad Ludwig (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly). They held off Loras for the 4-3 comeback win.
UW-Whitewater will be back in action for the ACAA Championships in Hudson, N.H., this weekend. The men will play in the semifinal game against Finlandia (Mich.) on Saturday at 10 a.m. If they win, they will play in the final on Sunday at 11 a.m.
