The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team picked up two victories on Homecoming Saturday.
The Warhawks (8-0 overall, 6-0 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) posted their 102nd straight dual win over a conference opponent with a 9-0 sweep over UW-Stout to start the day at Wangerin Courts in Whitewater.
UW-Whitewater closed the day with a 7-2 triumph over Lake Forest (Ill.) at Lake Geneva Tennis in Lake Geneva.
Against UW-Stout (0-9, 0-5), the Warhawks dropped a combined two games on their way to a doubles sweep. Sophomore
Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) and freshman
Megan Setter (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy) posted an 8-0 victory at the No. 1 slot, and sophomore
Olivia Kraft (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) and freshman
Courtney Day (Oshkosh, Wis./North) tallied an 8-1 win at No. 2. Sophomores
Elsie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) and
Jessica Minkov (Schiller Park, Ill./East Leyden) combined for an 8-1 triumph at the third position.
UW-Whitewater continued its strong play in singles. Rueth collected a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6, and junior
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1. Day didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5, and senior
Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) recorded a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 4.
Other winners included junior
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) at No. 3 by a 6-1, 6-2 score, and Kraft at No. 2 by a 6-1, 0-6, 1-0 (10-7) count.
In the match against Lake Forest (11-2), the Warhawks claimed two of the three doubles matches. Rueth and Setter posted their second win of the day at 8-6 in the second position, and sophomores
Bryce Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and
Madalyn Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) paired up for an 8-4 victory at No. 3.
After the Foresters tied the match at 2-2 with the first singles decision, UW-Whitewater claimed each of the remaining five matches. Kraft collected a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 2, and Minkov tallied a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4. Palavra clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3.
Slicker contributed a 6-1, 7-6 (1) triumph at No. 5, and Ha registered a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 to account for the final margin.
The Warhawks conclude the fall season with the WIAC Championship, which is slated for Oct. 26-27 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
