The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2019-20 season Saturday with a dual meet at Illinois Tech.
The Warhawk women topped the Engineer women by a 147-68 score, while the men were defeated 129-89.
"This meet is a great place for us to start from this season," UW-Whitewater Head Coach
Elise Knoche said. "I loved the fight we showed when we were in close races today. We have been working hard these past few weeks in practice, and our teams did a great job of getting up and racing today in our first meet of the 2019-2020 season."
On the women's side, senior
Renata Schlomann (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels), freshman
Leanne Stigler (Beloit, Wis./Muskego), senior
Meredith Gustafson (Brookfield, Wis./East) and freshman
Savana Bitz (Grey Eagle, Minn./Melrose Area) combined to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:54.77.
Junior
Olivia Theobald (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) claimed the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:19.96, more than 45 seconds faster than the runner-up, and finished first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:25.33. Schlomann posted a mark of 25.34 in the 50-yard freestyle, good for a first-place finish.
Senior
Bailey Weston (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) won the 100-yard freestyle with a result of 55.84 seconds to out-touch runner-up Bitz. Freshmen
Madyson Gomez (Cary, Ill./Dundee Crown) and
Emily Rundahl (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) finished 1-2 in the 200-yard backstroke, as Gomez touched the wall in 2:16.16 and Rundahl finished in 2:19.70.
Bitz, Theobald, Weston and Schlomann combined to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43.03, more than four seconds faster than the runner-up.
Junior
Sydney Olson (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy) posted a score of 175.45 on the 1-meter diving board to win the event.
For the men, juniors
Jake Herlache (West Bend, Wis./Grafton),
Tyler Chatterton (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper), freshman
Joe Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual Learning) and junior
Nick Jelich (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University HS) teamed up to place first in the 200-yard medley relay, out-touching the Engineers' "A" relay with a time of 1:40.23.
Herlache finished first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.01, and Jelich claimed the 50-yard freestyle with a 22.55. Wenszell out-touched Chatterton to win the 200-yard individual medley by just over one second with a 2:01.20, and later claimed the 200-yard backstroke in 1:59.21, the only sub two-minute time in the field.
The Warhawks head to the All-Wisconsin Invitational next Saturday, Oct. 19, at Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer.
