Big Second Half Lifts Men's Soccer Past Alma

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team tallied three goals in a four-minute span Saturday to break a 1-1 tie and defeat host Alma (Mich.) by a 4-1 score.

With the match tied at 1-1 heading into the second half, the Warhawks' scoring barrage started when junior midfielder Yoshihiko Fukushima (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) netted his first goal of the season, one that proved to be the game-winner, in the 56th minute.

Just over one minute later, junior forward Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) collected his team-leading sixth goal of the year on a counter-attack following a corner kick by the Scots (3-5 overall) one minute earlier.

UW-Whitewater rounded out scoring one minute later as junior midfielder Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) scored in the 59th minute.

The Warhawks (5-4-1) out-shot the Scots 28-11 in the contest, including an 18-7 margin in the first half.

Senior defender Jack Wirth (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) opened scoring in the match in the 10th minute on a header. Senior midfielder Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was credited with his team-leading fifth assist of the season.

After UW-Whitewater posted six more shots, including two on goal, Alma leveled the match in the 32nd minute.

The Warhawks put one more shot on net before halftime.

UW-Whitewater continued the pressure in the offensive third early in the second half with five shots over the first six minutes of action. Raymonds was stopped on a shot in the 54th minute before Fukushima put the Warhawks ahead for good.

Freshman goalkeeper Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) shut out the Scots in the second half to earn his third win of the year. Freshman Jason Purlee (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) played the first 45 minutes of the affair and made two saves.
