The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team continued play in the NCAA Tournament. They hosted Gustavus Adolphus at Wangerin Courts for the second round Saturday morning.
The No. 34 Warhawks (21-6) avenged their 5-4 regular season defeat at the hands of No. 28 Gustavus Adolphus (18-8) with a 5-2 victory to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history and the third time in the last four years.
In doubles, seniors
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) led the way with an 8-6 victory in the first slot. Senior
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) and junior
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) followed up with an 8-1 affair in the second position to give the Warhawks the lead heading into doubles.
In singles, the Warhawks took three of the first four matches. Kitchell put together a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the first slot over regionally-ranked Briana Hartmann, while freshman
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) followed up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the sixth match. After the Warhawks dropped a match in the third slot, junior
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) emerged victorious in the fifth slot in a 6-0, 6-2 battle to clinch the match for the Warhawks.
The Warhawk women will be back in action for the final time this season on Wangerin Courts for the NCAA Tournament third round Sunday at noon. They will face the winner of Grinnell and No. 10 Chicago, the latter of which the Warhawks lost to earlier in the season in a 7-2 affair.
