Newman, Tortorice Clinch All-America Honors at NCAA Wrestling Meet

Senior Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy) and sophomore Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team sealed their places on the All-America podium Friday on the first day of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at Cleveland Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio.
 
The Warhawks concluded the day in 17th place.
 
Newman, the No. 1 seed and defending champion at 184 pounds, posted a 2-0 record to reach the semifinals. He bested Joe Cutugno of RIT (N.Y.) with a first-round pin at 1:53 and defeated conference rival Dan Squires of UW-Stevens Point, the bracket's No. 8 seed, in a 6-0 decision.
 
At 125 pounds, Tortorice recovered from a first-round defeat against eventual semifinalist Nick Mancini of Mount Union (Ohio) to register consecutive victories, downing Waynesburg's Tristan Buxton in a 14-2 major decision and Messiah's Sean Redington in a 9-6 decision.
 
Newman is scheduled to face No. 5 Christos Giatras of Augustana (Ill.) in the semifinals, while Tortorice will take on sixth-seeded Christopher Doyle of Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) in the consolation quarterfinals.
 
Junior Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) wrapped up his season, falling in consecutive bouts at 165 pounds. He finishes the year with a 21-15 mark following his first trip to the national tournament.
 
Competition continues Saturday with Session III starting at 9 a.m. Central Time.
