The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team played a pair of duals Saturday in Rock Island, Ill.
The 28th-ranked Warhawks (10-1) dropped the first match 5-4 to Gustavus Adolphus (5-5) in the afternoon before claiming the night cap against Augustana (14-4).
Against Gustavus Adolphus, seniors
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, Ill/Central) took the lone doubles point for the Warhawks in the no. 1 slot 8-6. The Warhawks battled back into a 4-4 tie in the last singles set. Senior
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) won 6-3, 6-1 in the second singles match, while junior
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) claimed a point 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the fifth slot. In the fourth and decisive singles match, Wallace dropped the first set before battling back. She took the match to a third set before falling 5-7, 6-2,11-13.
In the night match against Augustana, the Warhawks did not drop a single set in singles or doubles. Freshmen
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) and
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) took the third doubles match 8-2. The Warhawks kept control of the dual all through singles as well. McGuire won the third singles match in a 6-4, 6-2 affair, while Martin finished out the night in the six slot with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Women's tennis plays again next Friday against UW-Milwaukee. The dual will be held at Elite Sports Club-River Glen in Milwaukee at 1 p.m.
