Men Fourth, Women Sixth After First Day at WIAC Indoor Championships

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed a strong opening day Friday at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships (Presented by Culver's) at UW-Stevens Point.
 
The Warhawk men, ranked seventh in the nation, are fourth after the first day of competition with 35 points, only two out of third. The No. 17 women are sixth with 24.50 points, just 2.50 shy of fifth.
 
Sophomore Zach Jasinski led the men, taking the WIAC championship on pole vault with his second straight five-plus meter performance, a height of 16-05.25 (5.01 meters).
 
Senior Matt Green and sophomore Alex Duff placed third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump. Green's mark of 23-04.75 (7.13 meters), a new personal record, landed him among the top 15 in the nation entering the day. Duff, who entered the week 10th in the event, posted a 23-00.75 (7.03 meters).
 
Senior Jonah Nelson placed fourth in the 1-mile run with a 4:18.69, and the distance medley relay team of senior Alec Meixelsperger, sophomore Kiley Lofy, sophomore Ethan Kern and freshman David Fassbender crossed the finish line in fourth with a 10:25.79.
 
Other men's medalists included senior Jason D'Amico, who tossed a personal best 50-08.25 (15.45 meters) in the shot put to place sixth, and senior Logan Zeien who finished eighth in the 400-meter dash with a result of 50.95.
 
The Warhawks qualified four for tomorrow's 60-meter hurdles final, including Duff, who finished in 8.25 seconds (1st), sophomore Christian Jackson, who placed second with an 8.25, sophomore Quentin Mendez, who was third in 8.48, and senior Robert Martin, who was seventh in 8.55.
 
Senior Parker Witt and freshman Thomas Kelly qualified third and eighth, respectively, in the 60-meter dash. Witt posted a preliminary time of 6.96 seconds, while Kelly registered a 7.10.
 
Sophomore Abbie Felton (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) tallied an All-WIAC finish in the 400-meter dash to lead the women, collecting a time of 57.70 seconds. Senior Enyo Amet (Racine, Wis./Prairie) placed fifth in the event with a 59.12, and sophomore Ashley Tijerina (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago) also recorded a sub one-minute time with a 59.76, good for eighth.
 
Amet also tied for third in the high jump with a 5-04.25 (1.63 meters). Freshman Shelby Nickels (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) also ended her day on the medal stand with a 17-08.25 (5.39 meters) in the long jump, good for sixth place.
 
UW-Whitewater's distance medley relay team of freshman Jessie Braun (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine), sophomore Megan Hering (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights), senior Sara Fuller (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) and sophomore Sydney Prestifilippo (Naperville, Ill./North) placed sixth with a result of 12:45.16.
 
Competition resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. in Stevens Point.
