The No. 8 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team is tied for third out of 17 teams after the first day of the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional Championships at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Warhawks advanced to the championship semifinals at four weight classes, while three others remain alive on the wrestleback side of their respective brackets.

Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy), junior
Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), sophomores
Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) and
Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) will compete in tomorrow's championship semifinals.
At 184 pounds, Newman posted two first-period pins en route the final four, while Bonomo collected two major decisions, including one against No. 6 ranked Keone Derain of Elmhurst, to move onto the semifinal at 165.
Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) earned a pin before edging Concordia Moorhead's Jake Nohre in a 3-2 decision to advance at 125 pounds.
Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) posted one pin and one decision on his way to the semifinals at 141.
After dropping his quarterfinal match, sophomore
Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) rebounded with a 6-3 decision to reach the wrestleback quarterfinals at 133. Junior
Nick Stencel (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) and sophomore
Wilder Wichman (Watertown, Wis./Johnson Creek) each dropped opening bouts before recording two victories each at 174 and 157 pounds, respectively.
Competition resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. The top three finishers in each weight class punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships on March 9-10 in Cleveland, Ohio.
