The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team traveled to Platteville Tuesday night to continue Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play against UW-Platteville.
The 22nd-ranked Warhawks (16-4, 4-0 WIAC) continued their unbeaten streak in conference in 25-8, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18 fashion over UW-Platteville.
In the first set, the Warhawks went on an early 11-1 run to take a 15-6 lead. They were never in any danger and took the set handily 25-8. The second set started off with the Warhawks down 5-2, and they struggled to find their footing through the first half of the set, down 14-8 roughly halfway through. The Warhawks battled back within 23-18 towards the end, but it didn't prove to be enough.
The Warhawks gave a strong reply to start the third set, starting with a 9-4 lead and continued to build on their lead throughout the set and never let up. Heading into the fourth, the Warhawks kept pace with their conference rivals until going on a 5-0 run to give themselves a 15-8 lead. The team never let up on their way to another conference victory.
Senior outside hitter
Amanda Spera (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) led all Warhawks with 10 kills on the evening and three aces, and hit .333 on the night. Senior middle hitter
Kelley Berk (Cedarburg, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) also added in eight kills and three aces. Freshman outside hitter
Emma Aske (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) collected eight kills and a team-high eight digs, and freshman outside hitter
Emily Gillen (Richfield, Wis./Slinger) tallied seven kills.
Freshman setters
KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) and
Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) contributed 19 and 18 assists, respectively, while Sotiros had a team-leading four aces.
Junior middle hitter
Ashton Doll (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) hit .400 for the game for her seven kills and had three blocks. Senior defensive specialist
Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) registered seven digs, three assists and two aces.
The Warhawks return home Wednesday night to Russell Arena to host Carroll at 7 p.m. for Faculty Night and Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
