The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks volleyball team finished play at the Dig Panici Classic Saturday afternoon.
The No. 23 Warhawks (15-4) fell in a contested match 21-25, 16-25, 25-14, 25-21, 10-15 to No. 10 Gustavus Adolphus (18-2).
Following the conclusion of the tournament, junior outside hitter
Rachel Butterfield (Milton, Wis./Milton) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
In the first set, the Warhawks found themselves down 16-9 before going on a 11-5 run to close within one. Gustavus Adolphus pulled away in the end 25-21. In the second set, the Warhawks struggled to find their footing and fell 25-16.
The Warhawks claimed an early 7-4 lead in the third set, before going on a 11-4 run to claim an 18-8 advantage and never looked back on way to a 25-14 victory. The Warhawks continued their momentum heading into the fourth set, taking an early 7-2 advantage. They continued to keep their distance midway through the set, holding a 17-12 lead. Gustavus Adolphus closed in 22-20 late, but the Warhawks put them away 25-22 to force a fifth set.
The Warhawks trailed 8-1 in the decisive set, but refused to give in and went on a 5-0 run to close within 2. Gustavus Adolphus pulled ahead in the last stretch, claiming the set and match.
Butterfield and reshman outside hitter
Emma Aske (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) both posted 14 kills, while Aske added three blocks. Junior middle hitter
Ashton Doll (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) contributed 10 kills and had a .333 hitting percentage.
Freshman setter
KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) had a career-high 33 assists, while her freshman setter
Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) added in 17 of her own.
Senior libero
Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) had a team-leading 16 digs. Senior middle hitter
Kelley Berk (Cedarburg, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) led the squad with six blocks, while freshman outside hitter
Emily Gillen (Richfield, Wis./Slinger) added three.
The Warhawks hit the road on Tuesday in a return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. They play for 7 p.m. at UW-Platteville.
