The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team advanced all three doubles teams to the championship round and all six of its singles players to the second round without a loss Saturday on the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship (Presented by Culver's) at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
Seniors
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) and
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) are on to the title match at No. 1 singles. After a first-round bye with the bracket's top seed, the duo bested fifth-seeded UW-River Falls by an 8-5 score and will face No. 2 UW-Eau Claire in tomorrow's championship match.
At the No. 2 draw, sophomore
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) and freshman
Jessica Minkov (Schiller Park, Ill./East Leyden), the No. 3 seeded duo, started the day with an 8-2 triumph over sixth-seeded UW-River Falls. The pair punched its ticket to the final with an 8-1 win over No. 2 UW-La Crosse and will face top-seeded UW-Eau Claire.
Sophomores
Allie Miller (Sturtevant, Wis./Union Grove) and
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) rounded out the Warhawks' impressive doubles showing as the top seed at No. 3. Miller and Nierman bested No. 5 seed UW-River Falls 8-0 to advance to the final, where they'll face second-seeded UW-La Crosse.
Kitchell (No. 1), Martin (No. 2), Minkov (No. 6) and junior
Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) at No. 5 each advanced to the singles semifinals via first-round bye as the top seed in their respective flights.
Palavra claimed her lone match at No. 3 singles, besting No. 7 seed UW-Stevens Point 6-0, 6-1. Nierman was victorious in her match against seventh-seeded UW-Oshkosh by a 6-1, 6-0 margin to move on to the semifinals. Both Palavra and Nierman are No. 2 seeds in their respective draws.
Play continues Sunday at 9 a.m. with the final two rounds of singles followed by the final round of doubles.
