No. 20 Volleyball Upends No. 13 Hope at Elmhurst Invitational

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team concluded play at the Elmhurst Invitational against Hope (Mich.) Saturday morning.

The 20th-ranked Warhawks (21-5) toppled No. 13 Hope 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-7.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, senior defensive specialist Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

In the first set, the Warhawks went on a 9-1 run to take a 19-11 lead.  Hope (21-5) closed within 2 at the end of the set, but a Warhawk 3-0 run gave them a 25-20 victory.   The teams were neck and neck with each other through most of the second set.  Another late 3-0 run gave the Warhawks a 22-21 edge, but it didn't prove to be enough and the Warhawks fell 25-23.

The back and forth affair continued into the third set, with the teams tied 15-15 later on.  The Warhawks went on an 8-2 run after this tie, which proved to be decisive in their 25-22 win.  The tight match persisted in the fourth set, with both teams going on 4-0 runs mid-set to keep things close.  Hope gradually built a 20-16 lead later on, which proved to be insurmountable for the Warhawks in a 25-19 defeat.

In the fifth set, the Warhawks offense caught fire and sparked a 10-1 run to give them a decisive 13-6 edge.  The Warhawks claimed the set and the match 15-7.

Senior outside hitter Amanda Spera (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) led the Warhawks with 13 kills, posted a .344 hitting percentage and had four blocks.  Freshmen setters KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) and Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) posted 22 and 15 assists, respectively.  Robinson contributed 28 digs on the day to lead the back row, and freshman outside hitter Emma Aske (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) registered 10 digs to go with her seven kills. Sotiros added nine digs.

Junior middle hitter Ashton Doll (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) led the squad with seven blocks, while junior outside hitter Rachel Butterfield (Milton, Wis./Milton) posted five. Senior middle hitter Kelley Berk (Cedarburg, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) collected four blocks, and freshman outside hitter Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added three to go along with her eight kills.
