The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team recorded its second 9-0 victory of the season, defeating UW-Oshkosh. The match takes the Warhawks to 4-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, putting them at the top of the standings, and gave the team its 93rd straight victory over a conference opponent.
UW-Whitewater sent out its senior tandem of
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) and
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) in the no.1 doubles match. They have not lost a conference match while playing together, and continued their roll, winning 8-2.
The No. 2 doubles position belonged to
Olivia Kraft (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) and
Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West). The freshman duo took the lead early, and never gave it back. The final score finished at 8-2.
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) and
Allie Miller (Sturtevant, Wis./Union Grove) were the third doubles team, and they dominated their matchup. They won 8-1, completing a doubles sweep for the Warhawks.
UW-Whitewater continued its success into the singles matches. Kitchell, a captain, won 6-1, 6-0 at the No.1 spot. She hasn't lost a singles match in conference all year. The victory clinched the series for the Warhawks.
Martin played No. 2 singles. She dominated, winning her match 6-0, 6-0. She now has 3 wins and 1 loss at the second singles spot.
Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) played the No. 3 singles spot. She dropped her first set in a tiebreaker after three set points, but rallied to win the second set, 6-3. This set up a dramatic final super tiebreaker, where Slicker came out victorious, 10-4.
The fourth singles spot belonged to Ha, who is on a two-match winning streak at the position. The final score of her match was 6-0, 6-1.
Kraft, who is 1-1 as a singles player, took her first set 6-2, and followed with a 6-1 performance.
The final match of the day was Miller at No. 6 singles. Miller has never lost a match while playing at No. 6. After losing her first set 2-6, she bounced back, taking the second set 6-0. The super tiebreaker round also went to Miller, with a final score of 10-6.
UW-Whitewater hosts the six-team Warhawk Fall Invitational this Friday and Saturday at Wangerin Courts. Competition begins Friday at 10 a.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m.
