No. 20 Volleyball Win One of Two in Day One of Elmhurst Invitational

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team traveled to Elmhurst, Ill. Friday evening to play a pair of games in the Elmhurst Invitational.

The No. 20 Warhawks claimed their second sweep of the season against host Elmhurst (Ill.) in a 25-12, 25-17, 25-21 affair, before falling to top-ranked Calvin (Mich). 25-23, 25-17, 25-16.

In the first set against host Elmhurst, the Warhawks jumped out to an early 7-3 lead.  They continued their relentless barrage throughout the set, going on a 14-6 run to take a 21-9 lead late and taking the 25-12 set with ease.  The offense stayed strong into the second set, starting with a 7-3 lead and expanding it throughout the set on the way to a 25-17 victory.

The Warhawks found stiffer competition in the third set, battling back and forth with the Blue Jays to a 11-10 advantage midway through.  A 5-1 run gave them a late 18-14 lead, which they carried to a 25-21 victory to clinch the sweep.

The Warhawks as a team hit .343 for the match.  Freshman outside hitter Emma Aske (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) led the squad with 10 kills.  Senior middle hitter Kelley Berk (Cedarburg, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) had a team-leading five blocks while junior middle hitter Ashton Doll (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) contributed three for the match as well as a .455 hitting percentage on her seven kills.

Senior libero Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) put together 17 digs.  Freshmen setters KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) and Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) had 20 and 13 assists respectively. Junior outside hitter Rachel Butterfield (Milton, Wis./Milton)  hit .467 for the match for seven kills while freshman outside hitter Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) tallied seven kills and hit .400.

Against the Knights, the Warhawks kept pace with them through the early part of the first set.  A 3-0 run brought them into a 15-15 tie with Calvin later on.  The Warhawks fell just short in the set 25-23.  The Warhawks continued to stay close to Calvin, but gradually fell behind as the set went on and dropped the set 25-17.

The Warhawks stayed close with the Knights in the early third set, tied 11-11 halfway through.  Once again, they couldn't hang on and fell to a late 6-1 Calvin run to finish the match.

Butterfield hit .500 for the Warhawks for the match for her team-leading eight kills.  Sotiros led the team with 16 assists. Senior outside hitter Amanda Spera (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) collected seven kills, and Aske registered six kills, eight digs and six assists.
