No. 8 Wrestling Sends Six to Semifinals at Wheaton

The No. 8 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team leads the 35-team Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational after the first day of competition after qualifying for the semifinals in six different weight classes.
 
Senior Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy), juniors Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), Nick Stencel (Oregon, Ohio/Clay), Isaiah Vela (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East), sophomores Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) and Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) all advanced to the semifinals to lead the Warhawks to 89.5 points, which leads second-place Messiah (Pa.) by 4.5 points entering Saturday.
 
Newman, the nation's consensus top-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, finished 3-0 for the day, including one pin and two technical falls. He'll face Wesley Schultz of UW-La Crosse on Saturday with a trip to the championship bout on the line.
 
At 174 pounds, Bonomo pinned Jacob Taylor of Trine (Ind.) before knocking off third-seeded Justin Ransom of Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) in a 3-1 decision. He will face No. 2 seed Jairod James of Mount Union (Ohio) on Saturday.
 
At 184, Stencel downed a pair of seeded opponents en route to the semifinals, including No. 7 Jason Lynch of Chicago in a 12-0 major decision and a 9-2 decision over Mount Union's Isaiah Watson-Kirksey, who is ranked seventh in the nation by D3wrestle.com and eighth by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
 
Vela, the No. 8 seed at 157 pounds, recorded a 14-4 major decision over top-seeded Steve Bonsall of Chicago, who is ranked seventh in Division III by D3wrestle.com.
 
Rice posted two victories by technical fall and one by pin at 133 pounds to reach the semifinal round, where he'll face No. 3 seed Dante Ginnetti of Baldwin Wallace.
 
At 125, Tortorice will compete against sixth-seeded Christopher Doyle of Baldwin Wallace, ranked eighth by D3wrestle.com and ninth by the NWCA, in Saturday's semifinal after recording three wins, including one pin and one technical fall.
 
Senior Austin Quartullo (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) remains alive in the consolation bracket at 149 pounds. He reached the quarterfinals, where he was edged in a 5-3 decision before recovering quickly for a 4-1 decision over No. 7 seed Josh Lawson of Elmhurst (Ill.).
 
Competition resumes Saturday at 10 a.m.
