No. 11 Volleyball Victorious at Carroll

The No. 11 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team posted its second straight non-conference road win and third consecutive victory overall Saturday with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-21 triumph at Carroll.

In the first set, the Warhawks (10-3 overall) fell behind 12-8, but came back to tie the match at 20-20. From there, UW-Whitewater scored three straight points and split the next four to take the opening stanza.

In the second, UW-Whitewater used strong serving by freshman defensive specialist Abigail Boyden (Malta, Ill./DeKalb) and junior setter Elizabeth Niestrom (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) to sprint out to a 16-5 advantage. The Pioneers (7-9) crept back into the set at 23-17, but the Warhawks split the next four points to earn a 2-0 advantage in the match.

UW-Whitewater carried its momentum into the third set, slowly building its advantage from 10-7 to 17-9. Carroll made another late run, but UW-Whitewater maintained its lead to take the match.

Niestrom finished with 40 assists, four service aces and nine digs. Senior right side hitter Sydney Racky (Walworth, Wis./Big Foot) tallied 14 kills and nine digs, and senior middle hitter Courtney Wagner (Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb) posted nine kills and three blocks. Junior outside hitter Amanda Spera (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) registered seven kills.

Junior libero Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) led the defense with 15 digs. Boyden collected eight digs and two service aces.
