The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team opened its 2017-18 season Friday with a pair of non-conference dual victories at Wangerin Courts.
The Warhawks (2-0 overall) downed Cornell (Iowa) 8-1 to start the day, and finished the sweep with a 9-0 triumph over Edgewood.
UW-Whitewater earned three doubles victories to start the run against the Rams (0-1) as seniors
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) and senior
Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) and sophomore
Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) tallied identical 8-1 wins at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively. Freshmen
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) and
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) gave the team a 3-0 lead thanks to an 8-3 triumph at No. 2.
The Warhawks took the Nos. 1 through 5 singles positions to account for the final margin. Straight-set winners included senior
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) at No. 1, Wallace at No. 2, Palavra at No. 3, Goebel at No. 4 and Slicker at No. 5.
Against Edgewood (1-4), UW-Whitewater surrendered only one game in doubles. Talyansky and junior
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) recorded an 8-0 victory at the top slot, and Goebel and Nierman combined for an 8-0 win at the second position. Senior
Kassie Alexander (Waukesha/South) and freshman
Allie Miller (Sturtevant, Wis./Union Grove) registered an 8-1 triumph at the third spot.
Martin and McGuire earned identical 6-0, 6-0 victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 flights, respectively. Nierman collected a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 3, and Palavra and Slicker were both 6-3, 6-0 winners at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.
Freshman
Jazmyne Schoeller (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) won a super tiebreaker to pick up a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) triumph at the sixth position.
The Warhawks resume play at Wangerin Courts Saturday at 9 a.m. in the 47th annual Warhawk Invite, which includes eight teams.
