The No. 39 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team exhibited strong play in doubles Sunday afternoon but was defeated 5-4 against No. 23 Kalamazoo (Mich.) in a dual match at Wangerin Courts.
The Warhawks (10-9 overall) took two of three doubles matches, but the Hornets (11-1) responded by taking four of six contests in singles play.
Sophomore
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and freshman
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) put UW-Whitewater on the board with an 8-3 triumph at No. 2 doubles. After Kalamazoo tied the contest at 1-1, junior
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) and sophomore
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) combined for an 8-7 (5) victory via tiebreak to give the Warhawks the lead entering singles play.
Kalamazoo claimed the first three decisions in singles to take a 4-2 advantage. Junior
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) registered a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 to bring UW-Whitewater within one point, but the Hornets clinched the match by the next decision.
Sophomore
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) outlasted Daniel Henry at the second position for a 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3 triumph to close out the dual.
The Warhawks return to action Friday at No. 6 Washington-St. Louis. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m.
