The No. 40 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team pulled out a pair of dual match victories against fellow members of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools Saturday at Wangerin Courts.
The Warhawks (12-11 overall) defeated UW-La Crosse (15-7) by an 8-1 score, and finished the day with a 6-3 triumph over UW-Eau Claire (14-7).
Against the Eagles, UW-Whitewater claimed all three doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 start. Junior
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) and
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) were first to finish, posting an 8-1 victory at the first position. Junior
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) and sophomore
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) were next, tallying an 8-2 win at the No. 3 slot. Sophomore
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and freshman
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) edged out Kyle McGrane and Austin Stefanich at No. 2 by a 9-8 (7) score.
Wood registered a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 4 singles to give the Warhawks a 4-0 lead, and Navratil clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the top slot.
Dechter (No. 3) and Zurowski (No. 5) were also winners, and freshman
Lucas Monterroso (Montevideo, Uruguay/Colegio Jesus Maria) used a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Simon Brandt 6-1, 7-6 (5) at the No. 6 position.
In the match against the Blugolds, UW-Whitewater surged to another 3-0 lead thanks to strong doubles play. Wood and Calabria (No. 2) and Navratil and Engelhart (No. 1) cruised to identical 8-2 victories, and Dechter and Zurowski completed the sweep with a 9-7 triumph at No. 3 after trailing 7-2 in the match.
The two teams split six singles matches. Engelhart was first on the board with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2, and Zurowski sealed the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
Navratil overcame a first-set loss to pull out a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 1.
The Warhawks visit Edgewood Wednesday for a dual match starting at 4 p.m. at Quann Park in Madison.
