The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's tennis teams competed Friday at Washington University in St. Louis, each falling in a dual match at Sunset Tennis Center.
The No. 40 Warhawk men were downed 7-2 by the sixth-ranked Bears, while the No. 22 ranked UW-Whitewater women were defeated by an 8-1 score against the No. 10 Wash U. women.
Both teams continue action in St. Louis tomorrow against Chicago at 2 p.m. Each of Chicago's teams are ranked among the top 10 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Men (10-10)
Junior
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) and sophomore
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) combined for an 8-4 triumph over the Bears' Jason Haugen and Konrad Kozlowski at No. 1 doubles. Junior
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) and sophomore
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) were competitive at the third position, but were outlasted 8-6.
Navratil carried his strong play into singles, besting John Carswell 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 slot to close the Warhawks' scoring.
Women (17-6)
Juniors
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) teamed up for an 8-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles.
Junior
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) and
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) each took a set in singles at the Nos. 2 and 5 positions, but were each outlasted. Junior
Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) forced a second-set tiebreaker in the sixth position, but was unable to push her match to a third set.
