The No. 39 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team won a pair of dual matches Saturday during a trip to Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind.
The Warhawks (10-8 overall) edged Wabash 5-4 before downing Hanover (Ind.) by an 8-1 score.
UW-Whitewater took two of three doubles matches in its opener against Wabash (7-10) to jump out to a 2-1 advantage. Junior
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) and sophomore
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) were first on the board with an 8-3 triumph at the No. 3 position.
After a narrow loss at the top spot, sophomore
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and freshman
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) gave the team the lead again with an 8-7 (5) victory at the second slot.
The Little Giants took a 3-2 lead after taking the first two singles decisions. Freshman
Lucas Monterroso (Montevideo, Uruguay/Colegio Jesus Maria) leveled the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 6 position, and sophomore
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) tied the match again with a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (2) triumph at No. 2 in one of four three-set matches in singles play.
Wood decided the match with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory at No. 5.
Against Hanover (6-5), Zurowski teamed with freshman
Matthew Primozic (Elkhart Lake, Wis./Plymouth) for an 8-1 win at the third doubles slot. Engelhart and junior
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) gave UW-Whitewater its second point with an 8-2 triumph at the No. 1 position.
Wood, Monterroso and sophomore
Brett Conard (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) won at the Nos. 4-6 singles positions, respectively, to help the Warhawks clinch the match. Wood and Conard were first to finish in straight sets, and Monterroso's 6-2, 6-1 victory provided the decisive point.
Navratil (No. 1), Engelhart (No. 2) and Zurowski (No. 3) all earned straight-set wins to account for the final margin.
UW-Whitewater resumes play next week Sunday, April 9, at 11 a.m. against Kalamazoo at Wangerin Courts.
