Women’s Tennis Faces Top Five Opponents in California

The No. 21 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team took on a pair of opponents ranked among the nation's top five Monday in a pair of dual matches at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont, Calif.
 
The Warhawks (11-3 overall) were downed 8-1 in each contest against third-ranked Bowdoin (Maine) and No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
 
Against Bowdoin (7-1), UW-Whitewater earned a team point in doubles play thanks to an 8-4 triumph at the No. 3 position by juniors Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West).
 
Beck then took her singles match to a third-set super-tiebreaker, but was outlasted 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (13-11) by Bowdoin's Pilar Giffenig. Senior Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) was also highly competitive in singles play, forcing a tiebreaker in the first set of her 7-6 (4), 6-4 setback against Joulia Likhanskaia.
 
In the match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (12-0), the Warhawks were swept in doubles play before junior Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) tallied a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles over Katie Kuosman.
 
UW-Whitewater's run of matches against ranked opponents continues Wednesday against 12th-ranked Tufts (Mass.) at 11 a.m. Central Time in Claremont, Calif.
