The No. 19 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team used a strong start in doubles Sunday afternoon to propel itself to an 8-1 victory over Augustana (Ill.) in a non-conference dual match at Premier Tennis and Fitness in Janesville.
Competing for the first time since the fall season, the Warhawks (11-1 overall) surrendered a combined seven games in doubles and claimed five of six singles matches to down the Vikings (15-2), the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin champions.
Juniors
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) tallied an 8-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles, and juniors
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and
Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) followed suit with an 8-1 win at the third position.
Senior
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and junior
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory at the No. 1 spot.
UW-Whitewater continued its strong play in singles. Goebel collected a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 6 to make it 4-0, and Wallace clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4.
Beck was next on the board with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at the fifth position, and Talyansky was also a straight-set winner by a 6-1, 6-3 score at No. 3.
McGuire powered through a second-set tiebreak for a 6-0, 7-6 (3) triumph at the second position to complete scoring.
The Warhawks begin a five-match spring break trip to California on Monday, March 20, against No. 4 Bowdoin (Maine) in the team's first of four matches against nationally ranked opponents during the trip.
