The No. 17 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team used a strong showing in singles play Friday night to defeat defending College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin champion Carthage 5-4 in a dual match at Premier Tennis and Fitness in Janesville.
After dropping two of three doubles matches to start the contest, the Warhawks (7-4 overall) took four of the six singles matches to emerge with the win.
Junior
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) outlasted Pawel Jaworski of the Red Men (5-6) by a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1 score at No. 2 singles to clinch the win for UW-Whitewater.
Sophomore
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and freshman
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) improved to 8-1 playing together this season with an 8-5 triumph at No. 2 doubles, allowing the Warhawks to only trail by one team point entering singles play.
Sophomore
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles, and Wood gave UW-Whitewater the lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Calabria gave the Warhawks their fourth point at the fourth singles position by a 6-1, 6-3 tally to set up Navratil's heroics.
UW-Whitewater continues action Saturday against Augustana (Ill.) at 3:45 p.m. at Hitters Sportsplex in Middleton.
