The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team completed an unbeaten weekend Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 victory over Grinnell (Iowa) at Premier Tennis and Fitness in Janesville.
The Warhawks (5-2 overall), who have now won five straight dual matches, took the first three doubles matches and didn't look back.
The Pioneers (3-4) took one singles match for their lone point.
In doubles action, sophomore
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and freshman
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) earned an 8-2 victory at the second position. Junior
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) and sophomore
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) registered an 8-4 win at No. 3, and junior
Grant Thompson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) and sophomore
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) recorded a 9-7 triumph at No. 1.
Wood put UW-Whitewater on the board first in singles, tallying a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the fifth position. Calabria clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the third slot.
Freshman
Lucas Monterroso (Montevideo, Uruguay/Colegio Jesus Maria) collected a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 6 for the Warhawks' sixth point, and Thompson made it seven with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1. Zurowski rounded out the scoring with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4.
UW-Whitewater returns to action Friday at UW-Green Bay. First serve is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
