The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team continues its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule and plays in its 2017 home opener this Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. against No. 23 UW-Stout. Saturday's game is also part of UW-Whitewater's Family Fest and is Alumni Day at Perkins Stadium. Last season's Family Fest game drew 17,535 fans to Perkins Stadium, the highest attendance on record in NCAA Division III history until earlier this season.


Saturday's game can be watched live on UWW-TV on channel 989 in the Whitewater area, channel 100.1 on the UW-Whitewater campus or online. The game can also be heard live on KOOL 106.5 FM WKCH or online at 940wfaw.com. Fans can also track live statistics.

The Warhawks enter Saturday's contest after suffering a 37-20 setback at No. 3 UW-Oshkosh, the team's first loss in a conference opener since 2001. UW-Whitewater tallied 13 unanswered points late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to draw within three, but the Titans scored the final 14 points of the affair to seal their win. The Warhawks recorded 411 yards of offense but held the ball for only 20 minutes of the contest.

The Warhawks were ranked third in both Street & Smith's preseason national rankings and the D3football.com Preseason Top 25 and 15th in Lindy's Sports Division III Top 25. UW-Whitewater is receiving votes in the latest D3football.com Top 25 and the American Football Coaches Association Division III Coaches Poll.

UW-Stout held a 10-point lead in the second quarter and a three-point lead midway through the third, but was outlasted 34-27 last Saturday at then-No. 12 UW-Platteville. The Blue Devils outgained the Pioneers 396-306 in total yards, but were stymied by four turnovers and 14 penalties for 161 yards.

SERIES

UW-Whitewater leads the all time series 48-10-2 and has won the last 15 matchups against UW-Stout. The Blue Devils led 16-10 at halftime in last season's showdown, but the Warhawks finished the game with 24 unanswered points for a 34-16 victory on Nov. 12, 2016, in Menomonie. The two teams combined for eight turnovers in the affair, but UW-Stout committed 11 penalties and was held to 2-of-15 on third down by UW-Whitewater. 

NEXT UP

The Warhawks host UW-La Crosse Friday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. at Perkins Stadium. A pregame concert featuring country singer-songwriter Jackie Lee will begin at the stadium at 5 p.m. More information will be available soon.

  • UW-Whitewater's average margin of victory over its last eight meetings against UW-Stout is more than 32 points. 
  • The Blue Devils earned a national ranking from D3football.com for the first time since 2005 after downing then-No. 4 St. Thomas (Minn.) on Sept. 9.
